Carnival Sunrise, a vessel under the ownership of Carnival Cruise Line, encountered flooding while journeying back to Miami from a five-day Caribbean voyage over the weekend, as reported by USA Today. Multiple passengers shared their firsthand experiences of the flooding incident aboard the cruise ship.
Matt Lupoli, a spokesperson for Carnival, stated in an email to USA Today, “Carnival Sunrise faced heavy rain while returning to Miami overnight Friday into Saturday.” He further added, “Some staterooms had to be taken out of service for Saturday’s departure as our team undertook cleanup and replaced carpeting. Guests who were unable to sail were provided full refunds, future cruise credits, and offered overnight accommodations if needed.”
One passenger, Rachel Cox, director of an Arkansas-based nonprofit, recounted her disappointment with the initial lack of compensation from the company, despite her belongings, including stored suitcases, being affected by the flooding. Carnival Cruise Line arranged a call with Cox only after she raised concerns, eventually offering a 25% future cruise credit. President Christine Duffy penned a note expressing apologies and inviting guests to submit documentation for assessing damage to personal belongings.
Duffy’s email to affected passengers read, “On behalf of the entire Carnival family, I am writing to express our sincerest apologies for the inconvenience you experienced due to the water intrusion incident on the final night of the voyage.” She acknowledged the frustration caused by the late-night relocation from staterooms and expressed regret over the disruption to passengers’ plans and comfort.
Carnival Sunrise, categorized as a Destiny-class cruise ship, has been in operation under Carnival Cruise Line since its float-out on October 23, 1999, christened by Madeline Arison. Despite the recent setback, the company assures its commitment to addressing passenger concerns and ensuring a positive cruising experience for all travelers aboard Carnival Sunrise.
